I'm living in Timor Leste now and there is much debate around the Chinese contributions to the development process here, especially given Timor's newfound natural resource wealth -- very similar to the same suspicions surrounding China's involvement in Africa you mentioned in your book. There are many varied opinions around the value of China's contribution towards large, new buildings for ministries etc here in Timor among the NGO/international sector and the Timorese... the buildings are very visable gestures that some argue don't tackle the real challenges the country is facing.
