I have just discovered your blog an...Dear Deborah,

I have just discovered your blog and am thrilled! I have been following China-Africa relations for the last few years. As a South African who grew up in both South Africa and China, the relationship has particular personal interest which has developed into a research interest.

The above post actually has perfect timing… I am attempting to finalise my MA thesis question on the foreign acquisition (and lease) of African land, hoping to consider China’s role in the “food security vs. fuel security” debate. However, I am concerned about the lack of viable data and statistics that reflect the extent of the land deals. Indeed, it seems that there is a reliance on media reports. These reports are often singular and verification is a challenge. My professor has also noted that it is extremely difficult to access or see the contracts between the investor and the host, so the details of the deal remain unknown. As a result I am unsure of which countries or regions to focus on as there are no numbers to follow. Statistics are desperately needed! The World Bank report was released a few days ago and I am just about to settle down to read it.

After watching your excellent presentation at IFPRI, I noted that you mentioned a Chinese firm that has begun developing an oil palm plantation in the DRC. Do you know of any further developments regarding this project? Do you know of any other biofuel projects that are being led by China or Chinese companies?

On a different note: You also mentioned that there is a concern about Chinese farmers in Africa supplying the local market with food grown on African land and the effect this has on local farmers attempting to supply local markets- has there been any literature published that further illuminates this concern?

I have found your book a delightful read and a valuable resource- thank you! I looking forward to hearing you speak as I recently found out you will be speaking at my university, the Graduate Institute in Geneva, on the 30th September.

Wishing you a wonderful day.
Best wishes,
Kiara Jade BarnesAnonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12100547542795724317noreply@blogger.com
